Through strategic foresight and dedication, Esraa exemplifies how HRCI certifications, learning, and other resources can play a pivotal role in career growth and success.
Read below to explore her insights, challenges, and achievements—revealing the invaluable impact of being HRCI certified.
Why did you choose HRCI as your career partner, and what was your journey to becoming dual-certified?
I chose HRCI because of its global credibility, its emphasis on strategic HR, and its alignment with my vision of advancing HR as a business enabler. The PHRi marked my commitment to mastering operational HR on a global scale, while the SPHRi was a natural next step to solidify my expertise in strategic HR leadership. Together, they strengthen my ability to address challenges across diverse markets.
The journey to becoming dual-certified was transformative. It demanded a shift in mindset—from operational execution to strategic foresight. I deepened my understanding of global HR trends, legalities, and people strategies, which prepared me to lead transformative initiatives and align HR objectives with organizational success.
How did you balance studying for the certification with your professional and personal responsibilities?
Balancing preparation with a full-time leadership role and personal commitments required disciplined planning. I set aside dedicated study hours in the evenings and weekends, making the most of every opportunity to integrate learning into my routine—whether reviewing concepts during my commute or applying case studies to real-life scenarios at work.
A key strategy was breaking the syllabus into manageable milestones, and celebrating small wins along the way kept my motivation high. Support from family, colleagues, and mentors also played a vital role, offering both encouragement and understanding.
How has HRCI contributed to your career growth and success?
HRCI has been instrumental in positioning me as a credible and strategic HR leader. The certifications validated my expertise to global stakeholders, enhancing trust in my ability to lead cross-border HR operations. The practical experiences gained during my certification journey equipped me to apply global HR standards in real-world scenarios, including spearheading change management initiatives and driving organizational transformation.
For example, I successfully led large-scale initiatives such as talent mapping frameworks, performance management strategy, competency-based assessment centers, and employee experience programs. These efforts resulted in measurable outcomes, such as enhanced talent retention, streamlined succession planning, and improved organizational engagement during periods of change and restructuring.
As an HRCI Ambassador, I’ve had the privilege of expanding my professional network and mentoring aspiring HR professionals. The credibility, global perspective, and practical application have been a cornerstone in driving my professional growth.
Have you leveraged the HRCI Learning Center in your professional development?
Yes! The HRCI Learning Center has been an excellent resource for staying ahead of HR trends and gaining practical, actionable insights. For example, leveraging insights from Tools for Strategic Alignment, I developed and implemented a capability strategy at Jazeera Airways, focusing on aligning people, processes, and technology with organizational goals. The module on Compensation and Benefits was instrumental in revamping our employee value proposition, ensuring competitiveness in the market while managing costs effectively.
What strategies would you recommend to HR professionals looking to maximize the benefits of HRCI's offerings?
Start by choosing a certification that aligns with your career goals. As you learn, try applying new insights right away to boost your HR training. It helps to get involved with HRCI's community, whether through webinars or forums, to gain fresh perspectives and share experiences. Don’t hesitate to seek guidance from mentors, as their advice can be invaluable for navigating challenges. Also, explore the Learning Center's resources to stay current. Remember, your certification is just the beginning of a lifelong learning journey, so keep revisiting HRCI’s materials to stay aligned with industry changes.
How has the HRCI community facilitated connections or mentorship opportunities for you?
The HRCI community has been invaluable in connecting me with HR leaders worldwide. It has provided a platform for meaningful exchanges of ideas, mentorship, and collaboration. These connections have inspired innovative solutions to challenges I’ve faced and broadened my perspective on global HR practices.
Through an HRCI webinar, I had the opportunity to connect with fellow HR professionals who guided me in refining my approach to organizational transformation. This collaboration strengthened my leadership abilities and contributed to the success of a change management initiative at Jazeera Airways.
What is your number one piece of advice to someone who wants to begin a career in HR? How do you give back to the HR profession?
Approach the field with a strategic mindset and a passion for creating value for both employees and the business. Stay curious, embrace challenges, and never stop learning.
To give back to the HR profession, I mentor emerging HR professionals, sharing my knowledge and experiences to help them navigate the field and grow as leaders. I also contribute to industry forums, participate in panel discussions, and inspire others through my role as an HRCI Ambassador.
What is the most significant change in your career or professional life since becoming certified?
Becoming certified significantly elevated my professional credibility and empowered me to take on senior leadership roles early in my career. At the age of 35, I was appointed Regional Head of HR for the GCC at KLC Company, and by 36, I was offered the role of Associate Vice President at Jazeera Airways, leading HR across more than 18 countries.
In both positions, I faced the unique challenge of managing HR teams with members who had more years of experience. However, my certification and the confidence it instilled provided the credibility and expertise needed to overcome this challenge. The knowledge and skills I gained from HRCI helped me navigate these complex dynamics and positioned me as a professional leader who could stand my ground.
Additionally, my HRCI certification equipped me to engage confidently with senior leaders and board members, challenging them with strategies that were grounded in both research and practical HR approaches.
Looking to the future, how do you plan to leverage HRCI resources to achieve your career goals?
I recently completed the preparation course for the GPHR certification and am now preparing to take the exam. This will further enhance my global HR expertise, especially in international HR management and cross-border operations.
I will also continue to engage with the HRCI Learning Center, webinars, and community discussions to stay updated on emerging trends and best practices.
What is the top challenge or trend you foresee in the HR industry?
The top challenge I foresee is the need for HR professionals to navigate remote and hybrid work models, while also integrating AI and automation into HR processes. As organizations continue to embrace flexible work arrangements, HR will face the challenge of maintaining a cohesive organizational culture, ensuring employee engagement, and managing performance across dispersed teams. Additionally, the growing presence of AI in talent acquisition, performance management, and employee development will require HR professionals to adapt to new technologies and ensure their ethical use within the workplace.
HRCI can support professionals in navigating these changes by offering resources and certifications focused on leading remote teams, fostering virtual collaboration, and adapting HR strategies to support hybrid work environments. They can also help HR leaders understand and leverage AI-driven HR tools, providing guidance on the ethical use of AI and how to integrate it into people management processes without compromising human connection.
What area of HR do you find most rewarding and why?
I find the “people experience” to be the most rewarding area of HR. It is incredibly fulfilling to create an environment where employees feel valued, supported, and empowered to bring their best selves to work. The impact the “people experience” is both measurable and meaningful, as it leads to improved retention, performance, and overall satisfaction across the workforce.
