California HR Conference Day 1 Recap

It is a great pleasure being included on the Writer’s Coalition for this year’s California HR Conference. I’m thrilled to post live social media updates throughout the conference. Follow me on Twitter @HRCITeria to learn what’s trending and what’s next in HR.

Today, I joined dedicated HR professionals during pre-conference sessions. I met the friendly greeters who are responsible for assisting with registration and enjoyed the lively tunes pumping by DJ Noble, director of music for the conference.

Some key takeaways on the three main areas HR should focus on from the pre-conference general session, “Managing the Biggest Hurdles for California Employers” with Jonathan Siegel, principal at Jackson Lewis Law firm: Recruitment, Retention and Turnover and Culture Management.  With the unemployment rate at 3.7% in California, he shares tips on how HR professionals can combat wage inflation, productivity/efficiency and retain top talent.

Here are a few tips Siegel shared in his session to attract and retain talent:

  1. Define Your Culture – Brand who you are to your employees and the public. If you have an internal marketing team, work with them to effectively brand your culture.
  2. Mobile Sourcing – With over 45% of workers searching for jobs online, having a mobile friendly and responsive website is key.
  3. Videos – Creating a short 30-60 second video announcing the job posting with text, graphics, sound and music.Videos for hard-to-fill positions are effective when sharing those job duties.
  4. Flexible Work Schedules/Telecommuting
  5. What does your organization do in the community? Partnering with local schools/community colleges/trade schools to give back.
  6. Hiring Workers over 55 – By 2020, the 55 or older population will account for 25% of the labor force, up from 13% in 2000.
  7. Getting talent Back to Work – Hiring the over 700,000 people that are released from prison each year.
  8. Electronic Recognition Software – Offering incentives for Health/Wellness programs and Financial Wellness programs.

Those are just a few tips Siegel shared with the audience to stay on top while performing HR duties in California.

The perfect end to the pre-conference sessions was laughing and connecting with HR professionals at the comedy show with Al Madrigal.  I hope he keeps it clean and PC in a room of HR professionals.  For all live updates follow the #CAHR19 hashtag on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn.
